Biology Professor and Strategic Advisor to the President for the Canada Caribbean Institute (CCI) at McMaster University
Dr. Juliet Daniel is a Professor in the Department of Biology and Strategic Advisor to the President for the Canada Caribbean Institute (CCI) at McMaster University. She holds an associate membership in the Department of Oncology and Francombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute at McMaster. Dr. Daniel earned her B.Sc. from Queen’s University and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. After postdoctoral work in Tennessee, she joined McMaster in 1999 to establish her research lab.
Her research focuses on cell-cell adhesion, signaling through transcription factors, and their role in cancer. Notably, she discovered the gene “Kaiso,” linked to tumor progression in breast, colon, and prostate cancers.
Dr. Daniel’s current work is focused on colon cancer and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), particularly in young women of African ancestry. Her team seeks to identify the genetic or genomic mutations/alterations that contribute to racial disparities in TNBC.
Dr. Daniel has received numerous honors, including the ONYX Magazine Woman of the Year Award, a WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award and a BE-STEMM Mentorship Award, for her contributions to science and community.
